Two charts of Google: a birth without a time, and a first trade to the minute

DestinyKey research. By Akim Kaufman.

A company, like a person, has a moment of birth — and more often than not only the date is known. Google Inc. was incorporated on 4 September 1998 in Menlo Park, California; history did not keep the hour the papers were signed. This is the most ordinary situation there is: most of our users' charts look exactly like this, and it is the case we built destinykey.app for — a reading without houses or an Ascendant, honest about what is known. Google's second birth, however — the first trade on NASDAQ on 19 August 2004 — is known to the minute. Two charts, two ways of reading, and one line that runs through both.

Chart one. 4 September 1998, Menlo Park, time unknown

What is known without a time: Sun 12° Virgo, Mercury 25° Leo, Venus 27° Leo, Mars 9° Leo, Jupiter 24° Pisces (retrograde), Saturn 3° Taurus (retrograde), Uranus 9° Aquarius (retrograde), Neptune 29°44' Capricorn (retrograde), Pluto 5° Sagittarius, North Node 1° Virgo. Over the day the Moon moves from 12° to 25° Aquarius — the Moon's sign is certain, its degree is not.

Sun at 12° Virgo. Virgo is the sign of sorting, indexing and service. The company's mission — "to organize the world's information" — reads as if an astrologer had written it from this Sun. The North Node at 1° Virgo sits beside it: the direction of growth and the essence coincide. That is rare — a company doing exactly what it was born to do.

Mercury conjunct Venus in late Leo. Information (Mercury) presented so that people love it (Venus), and in Leo — on stage, large, with a name. The logo everyone recognises, the doodles on the home page, the search box as the front door of the internet — that is Mercury–Venus in Leo. The company does not merely search; it wants to be loved for the way it searches.

Mars at 9°35' Leo in exact opposition to Uranus at 9°33' Aquarius. The orb is two minutes of arc. This is the chart's defining aspect. Mars is action, drive, competition; Uranus is technology, the network, upheaval. In opposition they produce a company that acts by breaking with what came before: it breaks the rules of the market, then becomes the rule that others try to break. The axis — Leo/Aquarius, "I" against "everyone" — also describes Google's relationship with people: a service for all, decisions for itself.

Saturn at 3° Taurus, retrograde. Money (Taurus) arrives late and not as planned. In its first years Google did not know how to make money; the advertising model came later and turned out harder than it looked from outside. Saturn in Taurus is a financial structure that, once found, cannot be moved.

Jupiter at 24° Pisces, retrograde. Boundlessness. Pisces is the ocean, Jupiter is growth; together, a company with no natural limit to its expansion — search, mail, maps, video, a browser, a phone, AI. Retrograde: expansion inward — everything Google absorbs becomes part of one organism.

Neptune at 29°44' Capricorn. The last degree of the sign — the degree of completion. Neptune dissolves; Capricorn is the old corporate hierarchy. The company was born at the moment the former order of large corporations was ending, and became the new one.

Pluto at 5° Sagittarius. Power (Pluto) over knowledge and its distribution (Sagittarius). In 1998 that looked like a promise; today it reads like a description of the market.

Moon in Aquarius. The emotional base is the network — people in the plural, "users" as an abstraction. A Moon in Aquarius does not know one person; it knows an audience. For a service that sees billions of queries and not a single face, that is exact.

Chart two. 19 August 2004, New York, 11:56

The trading day opens at 9:30, but Google did not open with the bell that day: an unusual auction-style offering delayed the first trade until almost noon. The chart of the first trade is the chart of a second, public birth — and it has houses.

Ascendant 4° Scorpio, MC 10°53' Leo. Sun 27° Leo, Moon 9° Libra, Mercury 4° Virgo (retrograde), Venus 11° Cancer, Mars 5° Virgo, Jupiter 22° Virgo, Saturn 22° Cancer, Uranus 5° Pisces (R), Neptune 13° Aquarius (R), Pluto 19° Sagittarius (R).

Sun in the 10th house, at the top of the chart, in Leo. The company goes public as a king — it does not ask, it announces. This is one of the most regal placements a corporate chart can have: the Sun in its own sign and in the house of reputation.

Ascendant in Scorpio; its rulers are Mars in the 10th and Pluto in the 2nd. The public face is secrecy, control, depth. Mars in the 10th: the drive is aimed at status. And Pluto, the second ruler of the Ascendant, stands in the 2nd house — the house of money. The very identity of the public Google is money through concentrated power. Pluto in the 2nd is the classic signature of a monopoly: not "to earn" but "to own the source".

Mercury retrograde conjunct Mars, both opposite Uranus. Yes, Google went public under a retrograde Mercury — astrologers noted it at the time: the founders' Playboy interview during the quiet period, the regulator's objections, the offering price cut at the last moment. But what matters more is this: it is the same Mars–Uranus opposition as in the 1998 chart, now with Mercury — information — added to it. The company that in 1998 fought the market with technology began, in 2004, to fight with information: what to show, what to hide, whom to lift, whom to remove.

Jupiter at 22° Virgo in exact sextile to Saturn at 22° Cancer (orb 0°12'). Growth with structure — expansion that does not fall apart. Jupiter in the 11th house (audiences, networks) and Saturn in the 9th (law, foreign countries, regulators): growth through the audience, limits through law and foreign jurisdictions. Since 2004 that is exactly how it has gone: the European Commission, the courts, the fines — always from the 9th house.

Venus at 11° Cancer in the 9th, square the Moon in the 11th. What the company loves (Venus) and what the public feels (Moon) diverge. Users (the 11th house) and the company look in different directions — and both are sure they are right.

Uranus and Neptune in the 4th house. The foundation is technology and a dream. What everything stands on is not a building but an idea: that the internet can be put in order.

What runs through both charts

The opposition of Mars and Uranus. In 1998 — exact, across Leo and Aquarius. In 2004 — within a degree, across Virgo and Pisces, with a retrograde Mercury on Mars. An aspect repeating in two independent charts of the same company is not coincidence but character: Google grows through rupture. First with the market; then with its own users, once it starts deciding for them what they need.

One more thing. The Uranus of the 1998 chart stands at 9° Aquarius. Pluto, now moving through Aquarius, reaches that degree in 2027–2028 — and at the same time comes to oppose the Mars of the incorporation chart. A Pluto transit over the Mars–Uranus axis is the moment when a structure built on rupture goes through a rupture of its own. We do not forecast the fate of companies; we note that the axis on which this one was born will be touched, in the coming years, by the slowest planet there is.
