In Persian astrological tradition, these four stars were considered guardians of the cardinal points: Aldebaran guarded the East, Regulus the North, Antares the West, Fomalhaut the South. Every ~2160 years, one of them roughly coincided with an equinox or solstice point, and the era received its name.
