In spirit, Juigalpa is close to cities like Manchester (England) — the industrial revolution and labor movements, and Auckland (New Zealand) — multiculturalism and love for nature. Rivalry exists with Managua, the capital, which "siphons off" finances and attention. Juigalpa feels deprived: the capital gets the best, while the province gets the leftovers. What it earns from. The main trump card is gold mining. In music, there is a mix of mariachi and reggaeton; in cuisine, grilled meat and corn tortillas.
What it is proud of. The city is proud of its independent spirit. Juigalpa was never submissive — neither to the Spanish nor to dictators. Locals love to tell how in the 19th century they burned down the tax office. The second pride is nature: waterfalls, mountains, coffee plantations. This is what attracts tourists and what residents consider their "brand."
What it is silent about. Juigalpa is silent about its dark pages: child labor in the mines, corruption of mayors, the fact that many families live below the poverty line while mine owners wallow in luxury.
